That being said, we also want to ensure that you’re well informed about the safe handling and use of propane. Here are some essential safety tips to keep you and your loved ones protected.

Recognizing the smell of propane

Propane is naturally odorless, so manufacturers add an odorant called ethyl mercaptan or methanethiol to give it a distinct smell, often compared to the smell of rotten eggs, spoiled meat or skunk spray. This unmistakable odor helps you quickly identify a propane leak.

For added safety, we recommend installing UL-listed gas detectors, which are specifically designed to alert you to propane leaks. Keep in mind that while carbon monoxide detectors are essential, they do not detect propane gas leaks.

Propane tank safety tips for gas leaks

Whether you’re at home or in a space with propane appliances, it’s essential to act immediately if you detect the smell of gas or receive an alert from your gas leak detector. Following the steps below is crucial for protecting your safety and that of your loved ones:

• Extinguish any sources of ignition, like candles or cigarettes.
• Get everyone out of the affected area immediately.
• Do not use any light switches, thermostats, phones or other appliances until you are safely away from where you smelled gas. These electrical products can produce sparks.
• Close the gas shutoff valve on the propane tank or cylinder if you can safely access it.
• Once you are safely away, call emergency services and FSi Propane.
• Give emergency personnel and licensed propane service technicians time to check for escaped gas and perform any necessary repairs.
• Even if you no longer smell gas, do not return to the affected area or attempt to turn on the propane supply valve.
• Give your trained propane service technician time to repair the leak, carefully inspect all gas appliances and relight all pilots.
• Stay away until you have permission to come back from emergency personnel or the service technician.
