It’s not exactly breaking news that the winters in Western Mass and Northern Connecticut are unforgiving. If you don’t have the best heating option in your home, the cold months can be uncomfortable at best — dangerous at worst.
At FSi Propane, we talk to homeowners all the time about their heating fuel choices. One of the standard questions we hear is, “Does propane or natural gas produce more heat?” To answer this question, we need to first discuss how these fuels differ.
Propane and natural gas are not the same, especially when it comes to performance, versatility and reliability.
Propane is found in the same wells as natural gas. When producers extract natural gas, they’re also collecting liquids like ethane, butane and propane —so there’s no extra drilling required. In fact, the U.S. produces so much propane that we export it. That means the propane you rely on for heating, hot water, cooking and backup power is overwhelmingly homegrown.
Some propane also comes as a co-product of oil refining. There’s also a growing supply of renewable propane, made from organic materials such as used cooking oil or plant matter. It’s chemically identical to traditional propane but even cleaner.
One key difference between natural gas and propane is density. Natural gas is lighter than air, while propane is heavier and stored as a liquid in a tank right at your home. That last part matters: instead of depending on a utility pipeline, you have your own on-site energy supply—a big advantage during storms, outages or utility disruptions.
Both propane and natural gas burn at about 3,560°F, but that’s where the similarities end. When you look at energy content, propane wins by a mile.
A single cubic foot of propane produces about 2,520 Btu of heat energy, while natural gas produces only about 1,012 Btu. In other words, propane delivers more than twice the heat of natural gas. When paired with today’s high-efficiency propane appliances, you get powerful heating, faster recovery times and lower energy costs.
Propane’s high efficiency makes it a clear winner for more than just home heating. Propane water heaters produce significantly more hot water at a lower cost than electric models. And because propane generates heat quickly and efficiently, it offers outstanding efficiency in a wide range of home appliances, including:
Natural gas isn’t available everywhere, and even if it is, connecting to the utility line can be expensive. Plus, when there’s a pipeline issue — even miles away — you could lose service until the utility fixes the problem.
Propane avoids all of that. Your fuel is stored right at your home, ready whenever you need it. Add a propane standby generator, and you’ll stay powered through any electrical outage.
Propane is one of the cleanest-burning fuels available and is listed as an alternative fuel in both the Clean Air Act and the National Energy Policy. It’s nontoxic, nonpoisonous and won’t contaminate soil or groundwater if it leaks.
While both natural gas and propane are low-carbon fuels, propane has a key environmental advantage: it doesn’t release methane, a greenhouse gas far more potent than CO₂. Propane also produces virtually zero particulate matter, giving your home cleaner, healthier air.
Unlike an impersonal and often unresponsive natural gas utility, propane is delivered by a local provider who knows your name and the home comfort needs of your family. FSi works every day to provide ample propane to fuel your lifestyle.
